Overview:
Volume 8: The Threat is Real is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Anthrax. The album was released in July 1998 by Ignition Records. The band and Paul Crook produced the album, which includes the single "Inside Out". Other singles released were "Crush", "P & V" and "Born Again Idiot". Volume 8: The Threat Is Real debuted at #118 on the Billboard 200 charts. The song Crush appears in the video game ATV Offroad Fury for PlayStation 2 and in the game's soundtrack.

Stephen Erlewine, reviewing Volume 8... for Allmusic, gave the album a mixed review of 2.5 stars out of 5. He also stated a belief that following 1993's Sound of White Noise the band had begin to enter a writing slump, which continues through this album. He comments favorably on the tracks "Crush", "Toast" and "Pieces", but suggests that overall, the album is less than the sum of its parts. Erlewine closed his review by commenting that the album is a "transitional" one, leading Anthrax to "new, uncharted territory."
