The rumors are true: Fleetwood Mac is going its own way without longtime guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

“Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour. The band wishes Lindsey all the best,” the group said in a Monday statement provided to The Times announcing its upcoming fall tour.

Something seemed amiss last week when former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette tweeted — then deleted — that Buckingham “is out but I'm not in,” Rolling Stone reported.

The news was revealed at the bottom of Monday’s announcement, as if it were an afterthought. But that didn’t stop several outlets from declaring that Buckingham was fired. The news release also noted that he will be replaced by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House.

“With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalogue of songs. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution. We look forward to honoring that spirit on this upcoming tour,” the statement continued.

Founding member and drummer Mick Fleetwood reassured fans that the group “has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents.”

“We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound,” he said in the statement.

Buckingham had been a member of the band since 1974, after founding members Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer had already departed. Bolstered by a string of hits — “Rhiannon,” “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Don’t Stop” — Buckingham was part of Fleetwood Mac’s most commercially viable lineup, along with Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and John McVie.

Monday’s announcement said the band will announce confirmed tour dates shortly.
