Not many bands can boast that their debut album is not only their best, but also considered to be icon among it's peers.

Boston did just that with this release. Four others that I'd put into that same category would be Van Halen's debut, Guns n' Roses and Dio. Maybe also Lynyrd Skynyrd with their debut.

Boston's debut is amazing from start to finish. Not a bad note on it anywhere. But who where they? Where did they come from? An MIT engineering grad on guitar? A no name guy at every other position in the band? How could a band without one single established or known member put out such an iconic piece of work? It was amazing at the time and still is. While some fans of FM radio might be sick of this album, that doesn't change how amazing it is. Over the last 40+ years, I guarantee you that I've heard any and every song on this album on the radio countless times. Not many albums can boast that kind of playability.

This album may be the very epitome of "AOR", depending on your use of the acronym. I am referring to Album Oriented Rock.

I almost bought a Rockman (the headphone amp setup) that his company was making in the 80's. Really loved the sound that I got out of it. Then I picked up a BC Rich STIII and never looked at the Rockman ever again.

I had a Tom Scholz "Rock Box". Not a bad bit of kit, as I recall. Someone told me he recorded some Boston stuff using one, don't know if that's true.
I've heard similar stories and have also heard that he just engineered the thing to have a "Boston sound", but that he didn't really use one of those early rock boxes, although along the same lines have heard he did have prototypes that he used. I do think that he did use the Rockman effects while recording Third Stage.
